READ ACROSS AMERICA

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program sponsored by the National Education Association that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading. It is held during the month of March to honor the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

The purpose of Read Across America is simply to encourage children to read. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating life-long successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

St. Anthony School will join with teachers, librarians, school staffs, parents and grandparents in cities and towns across the nation in celebration of reading. Every student will be asked to participate.

A giant used book sale will be held in the Library on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Read Across America week. On Friday, March 26 the entire school will participate in D.E.A.R. – Drop Everything and Read. Everyone – students, teachers, staff – will stop and read. Students can bring in slippers, a pillow, stuffed animal, etc. to comfortably snuggle up for a fun reading break. Other student activities will vary by grade level.

Reader's Pledge

I promise to read
Each day and each night.
I know it's the key
To growing up right.

I'll read to myself,
I'll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.

I'll read at my desk,
At home and at school,
On my bean bag or bed,
By the fire or pool.

Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head,
'Cause brains grow more thoughts
The more they are fed.

So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.
